If there were no mind, there would be no such thing as free-will. People wouldn't be people any more. There would be no understanding of anything. Our mind is what makes us who we are. It controls everything and we control it. There would be no memories, plans, ideas, judgement, love, hate, forgiveness ... The world, as we know it today, would not exist. Without a mind, we would be nothing.

The way we think, imagine, and even feel is completely based on the images we take in post-birth. Perhaps if that was not the case, our thought pattern might be 'pure', as intended. An interesting idea...

I think (though not certain) that agyat is trying to say that for anything "need" to exist (in this case the material universe) there has to be something with a consciousness or cognitive abilities to actually perceive and experience all that is around it.
